Super Rugby 2020: Preview – Brumbies V Reds {31/1/20}

Brumbies v Reds
Played: 33
Won: Brumbies 24, Reds 8, Draw 1
Last match: Brumbies 40, Reds 27 (15 June 2019)
The Brumbies were head and shoulders above their Australian conference opponents in 2019 but face a tough challenge against a rising Reds side in round one.

Brumbies head coach Dan McKellar has named four debutants in his side that will face the Reds in their Super Rugby opener in Canberra on Friday.

Academy product Noah Lolesio gets first chance in the number 10 jersey on debut while NRL convert Solomone Kata will also make his first Super Rugby appearance, starting on the wing after a strong performance in the side’s trial match against the Melbourne Rebels in Albury last week.

Returning Canberra local Harry Lloyd and young fly-half Bayley Kuenzle are in line to make their Super Rugby debuts off the bench with former Rebels and Waratahs back-row Will Miller and home-again lock Caderyn Neville selected to represent the Brumbies jersey for the first time.

Towering duo Murray Douglas and Darcy Swain will get the first opportunity to partner in the second-row with Allan Alaalatoa to lead the side out at GIO Stadium after being unveiled as the side’s captain last week.

Brumbies coach Dan McKellar said: “It’s always a hard decision to pick just 23 players out of a squad that’s been working so hard during preseason.”

“I’m really pleased for the guys that are going to make their debuts on Friday night. Noah and Harry have both come through the Brumbies academy, while Bayley has been waiting for a opportunity for some time and Sol has been really impressive since arriving in Canberra.

“As a team we’re really looking forward to opening our season in front of our home supporters, our region has been going through a tough time and we have an opportunity to make them smile on Friday night at GIO Stadium.”

Wallabies wing Henry Speight is set to make his Super Rugby debut for the Reds in their season opener against his former side, the Brumbies, in Canberra on Friday.

Up to five players could make their first starts for the Reds with young back-row Harry Wilson also named in the starting line-up at number eight.

Following standout performances in Queensland Premier Rugby that led to selection with Brisbane City in the National Rugby Championship (NRC) last year, Queensland pathway trio Dane Zander, Seru Uru and Hunter Paisami could potentially also make their debuts after being named on the bench.

The Reds will be bolstered up front with the return of props JP Smith and Feao Fotuaika from injury, while Izack Rodda will also make his comeback following routine off-season ankle surgery post the Rugby World Cup.

Queensland’s backline remains unchanged from last week’s pre-season win over the Waratahs in Dalby, with Isaac Lucas earning his second Super Rugby start in the number 10 jersey and James O’Connor partnering Jordan Petaia in an exciting centre pairing.

Liam Wright will lead the team in his first Queensland-capped match as captain and will have the support of Rodda, Speight and Bryce Hegarty as part of the Reds’ leadership group this season.

Head coach Brad Thorn said: “We’re excited for the season to start. We have the Brumbies first-up and we look forward to a tough contest.

“Dalby and Gladstone had us for two trial games which were important hit-outs leading into the season.

“Five guys could make their Queensland debuts on Friday night which is an awesome thing to recognise. They’ve worked hard during the pre-season and deserve their selection.”

Chiefs vs Blues: Preview And Teams List

Warren Gatland is making his mark as Gallagher Chiefs' coach this season, ditching co-captains and naming Bay of Plenty rugby superstar Sam Cane as the sole skipper.

Gatland says selecting the loose forward - a respected member of the Chiefs squad, experienced "world-class" player and notable leader - as captain is a "no-brainer".

Cane will captain the Chiefs for the Investec Super Rugby campaign, with their season starting against the Blues at Eden Park on January 31, before their first home game of the season in round two, against the Crusaders at Waikato Stadium on February 8.

Before that however, the Chiefs play their only pre-season match tomorrow afternoon, facing the Blues at Rugby Park in Waihī in front of a sell-out crowd.

It will be the Chiefs' first pre-season fixture in Waihī and the first run of the season under Gatland, who has committed to the Chiefs for the next four years.

The squad have spent much of this week camping at Waihī, with Cane saying it has been a good way to bond with the team members, with plenty of backyard cricket being played.

"A lot of boys have spent a wee bit of time over here but only being a bit over an hour from Hamilton so to have this community behind us, a sold out Waihī ground, it's awesome," Cane says.

He says the field looks in good nick and is looking forward to a strong pre-season game.

"Everyone wants to start the season well and you don't take pre-season games lightly," he says.

Gatland, the former Wales coach and former Waikato head coach and Chiefs technical advisor, says the co-captain set up was not something he had a lot of experience with. A vice-captain is yet to be selected but he is confident in there being plenty of experience and leadership in the team to support Cane as captain.

TEAMS

Blues: 15 Matt Duffie, 14 Mark Telea, 13 Joe Marchant, 12 TJ Faiane, 11 Rieko Ioane, 10 Stephen Perofeta, 9 Jonathan Ruru, 8 Hoskins Sotutu, 7 Tony Lamborn, 6 Dalton Papalii, 5 Tom Robinson, 4 Patrick Tuipulotu (c), 3 Sione Mafileo, 2 Kurt Eklund, 1 Alex Hodgman

Replacements: 16 Ray Niuia, 17 Karl Tu’inukuafe, 18 Ofa Tuungafasi, 19 Josh Goodhue, 20 Blake Gibson, 21 Sam Nock, 22 Harry Plummer, 23 Emoni Narawa

Chiefs: 15 Shaun Stevenson, 14 Sean Wainui, 13 Quinn Tupaea, 12 Alex Nankivell, 11 Solomon Alaimalo, 10 Kaleb Trask, 9 Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, 8 Sam Cane (c), 7 Mitchell Karpik, 6 Lachlan Boshier, 5 Mitchell Brown, 4 Tyler Ardron, 3 Nepo Laulala, 2 Samisoni Taukei’aho, 1 Aidan Ross

Replacements: 16 Bradley Slater, 17 Atu Moli, 18 Angus Ta’avao, 19 Naitoa Ah Kuoi, 20 Pita Gus Sowakula, 21 Brad Weber, 22 Aaron Cruden, 23 Anton Lienert-Brown

"It's something that I haven't really used a lot in the past and myself coming back, I just wanted to identify working with one person ... nothing against co-captains.

"Sam has co-captained the Chiefs since 2016. He is an experienced campaigner who is well respected by the players and management. We believe it was important to identify one person this season to lead the team and that individual would be supported by the team's leadership group."

Gatland is focused on his role as coach and believes the Chiefs have plenty of potential to make an impact in the competition in the next few seasons.

"It's great to be home and I'm passionate about this region and about the Chiefs and I'm really excited about this year," Gatland says.

"If you're worried about the expectation and the pressure, then you shouldn't be doing the job."

Cane, who made his Chiefs debut in 2012, was part of the teams' 2012 and 2013 Super Rugby title wins. He has co-captained alongside Charlie Ngatai, Aaron Cruden and Brodie Retallick for the past four seasons.

Cane says he is looking forward to leading the talented 2020 squad.

"I don't feel like I'm going it alone by any means.

"It is an honour to be asked to captain this side and I am excited for the season to kick off. We have a talented squad, with a good mix of experience and gifted young players. This combined with a fantastic group of experienced leaders, we believe will be the right ingredients to help drive us to another title.

Cane is looking forward to "working with and learning off" Gatland, who has been instrumental to the success of the Welsh national side during his tenure with an impressive record of four Six Nations Titles, including three grand slams.
